“My Place in the CNMI”
By Armalene Cabreros

On Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the NMI Council of Humanities sponsored an exhibition entitled "My Place in the CNMI" in the CNMI Museum for History and Culture. This exhibition consisted of photos taken by several high school students from different schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Prior to this exhibition, the Council of Humanities also sponsored a photography workshop taught by Professor Dirk HR Spennemann, an Associate Professor in Cultural Heritage Management at the School of Environmental Sciences, Charles Sturt University in Albury, Australia. He has also been coming in and out of the CNMI throughout the years. His main topic was community photography. The students learned many aspects involved with photography from a photographer's perspective to digital photo editing. He wanted the students to capture the essence of the CNMI because it is real. "You guys have lived here your whole life. Who else is more qualified to capture the CNMI than you?"

Since the very beginning of the workshop, the participants were informed of a contest with a total of 8 themes: self, selfimage, family, village/community, island, CNMI, future and art. Of these categories seniors Naomi Nosek and Armalene Cabreros won a place in a total of 3. Naomi Nosek won first place under the category CNMI with photo entitled “La Fiesta” and second place, category island, with photo entitled “Canoeing Practice”. Armalene Cabreros won third place for future with photo entitled Crossroads”.

Winning photos were hung in the hall of the museum with a large collage of all the entries occupying one wall. Winners came from several high schools on Saipan and one from Tinian. These photos will also be used in the second edition of the NMI History textbook which will hopefully be released by next school year.
