Another school year has passed
yet again for Mount Carmel School. In
many ways, this school year has been
very different yet traditionally the
same.
New uniforms, new school bags,
new supplies. On Thursday, August 6,
2009, SY2009-2010 commenced.
Some students were anxious about the
school year, some were nervous, but
most were missing the summer that
had just ended. It was a different experience
for students like the Freshmen
(9th), sixth grade and first grade
students who, throughout the year,
slowly ransitioned into high school,
middle school and grade school.
Many successful events were
held throughout the school year such
as Cultural Day, the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception, foreign student
exchange with schools from Japan,
Thanksgiving Fiesta, Royal Court,
Christmas Concert, Catholic Schools Week, Ash Wednesday, NHS and
NJHS Induction Ceremonies, Pep
Rally and so much more. These events
are traditionally held every year at
Mount Carmel School. A new event
that was also held this year was “Via
Crucis 2010”, a Lenten reflection on the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Spearheaded by Mr. Delson Balance,
this event featured various contemporary songs performed by high
school students. We hope that this event becomes a tradition at Mount Carmel
School.
Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club also staged two plays this year. In
December, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale at Fiesta’s
Hibiscus Hall. The show starred Anastasia Schweiger (9th), Kevin Bautista
(11th), Jalayne Benavente (12th), Ryan Ortizo (12th), Keolester Buenpacifico
(12th) and Darvhan Moses (7th) all of whom were involved with a story of two lovers separated by two kingdoms. This musical also featured Saipan
Southern High School’s prestigious Manta Band. Another play was staged
more recently at the American Memorial Park Visitor’s Center Theater entitled “What’s Going On?” a musical featuring CNMI’s history. This musical
starred Josie Santos (8th), Victor Cabrera (8th), John Edward Elenzano (11th), Keolester Buenpacifico (12th) and Frank Villagomez (9th).
This year was a big one for Mount Carmel School’s students as they won
several big island-wide competitions. First was in February 2010, when the
Mock Trial Knights won CNMI championships and were to compete in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania for the national competition. Next was in March 2010,
when Mr. Rosiky Camacho’s 3rd Period “We The People” class won as “We The People” State Champion and were to compete in Washington D.C. for the
national competition. In April 2010, Ryan Ortizo also brought back the coveted
Attorney Generals’ Cup. Other successful competitions include NFL,
NJFL, PGFC, Academic Bowl and the island-wide STEM Fair held both here
and on Guam. Our school has also participated in many COPSSA and MISO leagues for volleyball, basketball and outrigger canoeing.
This school year would not have been possible without our administrative
team, faculty and staff, students, parents and all individuals and groups
who have helped with Mount Carmel School.
